can anyone advise, i am running pentium 3 with 512 mb sd ram memory, big old hard drive, xp home no probs, but am thinking of upgrading my graphics card from an ati rage pro 32mb card to something like a 64mb card, probably ati again, just been looking into it and they all seem to be listed as 'ddr' memory type. now, i understand the difference between the 2 but my question is this, can your system have a different type of memory to your graphics or will i need to find a card with good old fashioned sd ram?? any ideas?

It does not make any difference. The memory on the MOBO will not clash with Graphics memory
