Graphics card update,help required

  joesoaps 12:59 17 Oct 2004

I am considering upgrading the graphics card on my pc so that my grandson will be able to play the latest games which he can't do on my present system.

System specs,

P4 2.4g processor,80g hard drive,512 mb memory,DVD rom and DVD+RW,nVidia MX440seAGP8x,Windows XP.

I think the big let down is the graphics card which I want to upgrade,I have seen a Sapphire Radeon 9600se 128mb DDr in Pc world for £69-99 and a Sapphire Radeon 9800pro 128mb at click here my question is are these cards suitable for playing the latest games,is the 9800pro worth the extra cost or are their better alternatives.

Your advice would be much appreciated.

I have the 9800 pro, it's a cracking card and is certainly capable of playing all the latest games, although you may have to turn some of the settings down, depending on the game.I found this one cheaper click here
but its not a Sapphire.someone else may tell you better what the difference is.

Have a look click here may give youan idea of the performance diference in different games.
I would do a little more searching as seems higher price end,can be had for £138 and sometimes even lower.
If you are in no hurry keep an eye on deals for the day at

Just watch out as there are some 128bit cards around you want the 256bit memory interface c ard.

I use a Sapphhire Radeon 9800 Pro and definitely recommend it. As long as you keep the screen resolution to 1280 x 1024 you will be able to play all the latest games. only if you want a resolution of 1600 x 1200 is it worth forking out more for a better card.

The Radeon 9600 is ok but any SE edition is always underpowered for good frame rates!

Spend the extra on the 9800 Pro as it is worth it.
You can pick one up fo around £135 quite easily.

Good advice there from Maccyroo, the 9800 pro should be fine for playing the latest games,no need to spend lots more money on the top cards as it will be quite a while before the games catch up with the card specs.

Does your upgrade have to be an ATI based card? click here available from click here for £88. An extra £15 will get you the 256MB version.

I have the 256MB version of this card and recently benchmarked it against my friend's 9800pro. While the ATI was slightly faster, the image quality was better on the Nvidia card.

It happily runs all the latest games (Doom3, Far Cry etc) and should do for some time to come.

The software bundle is decent too and if you're on a budget, it gets my vote for a good value all-round graphics card
