Google Earth shuts computer down

  lightfeet 23:50 21 Sep 2007

My friend’s laptop running Vista Home suffers a “broken” blue screen & shuts down whenever he tries to open Google Earth. This has only started to happen recently; it worked OK for the first few months after initial installation. We have uninstalled the program & reinstalled from a fresh download but it still switches the computer off. Virus & spyware scans have been run but nothing untoward was found. Does anyone have any idea what would cause this?

Do other graphics-intensive programs cause the PC to shut down? Games etc? This is an old program but gives the graphics hardware some work to do; click here

Leave it running full screen for a while, if it works at all.If it crashes the machine, go to the manufacturer's site and download VGA/graphics drivers, make sure DirectX is up to date; click here
Check current DirectX version by going to start menu/run, type

press return.
Still worth reinstalling even if it appears up to date, files may be missing.

Thanks brundle for your response but am unable to make hardware link work. Will have another try tomorrow. Good night

I had a similar "wouldn't work" problem after a time. Graphics card was the problem, so suggest follow brundle advice.
