Getting still shots from mpgs...

Bought my folks a digital camera for their 50th Wedding Anniversary quite recently. They've just been on a short cruise and, during their first use of it, managed to move the slider the wrong way, so all the "Photos" they've taken are actually short mpeg movies, of between 3 and 30 seconds in length!!

Now when these are on the PC, viewed as thumbnails in the folder they are stored on, the first frame of each movie is displaying, and it's this first frame that was the obvious intended photo.

So the question is:-

Any way to get a photo from the first frame?

There is software that can do it click here, but I don't know anything that is free. The pictures will be very poor quality because they are stored at a low pixel rate, relying on your eye integrating the defects over several images to make a viewable picture.
