Getting into a former system

To dig out files -possible?

Installing a D Link router to replace the Voyager 105 Modem caused some headaches.
The result of which I fdound I had locked my self out of the system by a password box asking for a user/password- that did not want to know any of my common ones.
So in frustration I installed a new system - which is on line but empty of all else.
The Doc files and the like are available
Re installing proggies is no problem
But I would like to transfer from old system favourites , AV and so forth.
Can I or is it a total startover?
If it is can I delete that system- to recover disk space?

If you did a full reformat of your hard drive and reinstalltion of Windows, then all your old data will have been deleted.

But you state that "Doc files and the like are available". Does that mean that you have them backed up somewhere, or perhaps that you only ran a repair of Windows?

If you only repaired, then your old data *should* be untouched.

shows 2 systems installed.
I can boot into either, but booting into the first[original] brings up the 'log on 'window that does not know me.

All old doc's as stated are there on the 'C' root.
What I would like to do is to transfer from original system- favourites address book A/V protection and the like and then delete that old system.

Depending on your system, try the following.

On Boot, keep pressing F5 until you set the Safe mode screen, select Administrater.

This may take you into the Windows Administrator system where you can access all users (without passwords - unless the Administrator has a pasword))or to a DOS screen, where you can do a DIR search, and hopefully find where your missing data is.
If you find it using this method.
use Copy (Full drive path of your data): destination path

For more help- from RUN type in copy /?
This will give you all the options you need
Good Luck

Terry F8 for safe mode on XP- to what were you referring?
Any ways by digging and delving I am getting there.
One interesting thing FireFox 3.0.03 never did run properly on my old system - could not find Bookmarks for example from FF2.0.1.6
However its found every thing on this new incarnation.

Will check out the rest of Terrys suggestions in a while.
