Getting Broadband on my computer

First off I'm getting on in years and I'm new to computers, so I will be grateful for all help and assistance with my problem.
I have a HP Pentium 4, 2.8ghz processor with XP sp2 as my OS.I recently tried to sign up for Broadband.BT failed.I tried Virgin and they failed too. Both said there was a "fault" somewhere.Because of this I am assuming my computer is at fault. Can anyone suggest what this might be.Thanks a million.

Please could you be a bit more explicit - when you say failed what did the error message actually say?

I get the message"a network cable is unplugged" but when I go through all connections I cannot find anything unplugged.

we all have that message down by the clock, well, a lot do...have you loaded the cd that came with the package? step at a time.

Do NOT connect the modem until the loader CD says so.

what was the problem in the end? BT must have changed the rules, I thought you signed up then a week or so later they switched it on, and you were committed for a year.
