Genuine Vista problem

My father bought a laptop back in November, from a high street store.
Up until now it had not been connected to the internet. Last week I set-up wireless broadband, but now his laptop is asking for confirmation that the Vista software in genuine. After tapping in the code from the case - it claims it is not.
Surely the store should have provided a genuine Vista system.
I believe it is a former "display" laptop. Might this have something to do with it?
Any thoughts?
Thanks
