game ports - what are they for?

what are game ports for? Are they for connecting things like steerings wheels, joy sticks to the computer?

If my motherboard does not have a game port, can I buy a pci card with a game port on it? If you can do this, which is better an add in card or an onboard port or is there no difference?

No difference

Remember, most new joysticks, wheels etc connect via USB nowadays.

I think it's also used for connecting MIDI devices such as keyboards (musical). That's why sound cards have one as well,
