Frozen Mouse

A friend of mine runs Windows XP. He has a problem in that usually when he boots up the mouse freezes and he has to reboot before it rights itself - any ideas of what might be the problem?

Is it a new mouse/new problem. Look in Device Manager for conflicts. Is it a usb mouse if so try another port.

No it's not a new mouse and there are no conflicts in Device Manager. It is'nt a usb mouse either - nothing so simple!

Have you tried CONTROL PANEL/ double click on MOUSE select HARDWARE TROUBLESHOOT.

1. Shutdown PC. Check that the mouse is plugged in properly. Unplug & replug either way. Also do the same for the keyboard connector.

2. Whether it's a standard or optical mouse you may want to clean it well. Even an optical mouse can play up if a little dust blocks it's lens.

3. When the freeze up happens press Ctrl+Alt+Del & see if any program(s) are not responding. These programs may be causing the freeze-ups & not [just] the mouse.

4. Try another mouse & see if this behaviour persists.

Also worth checking the Event Log to see if anything is being noted in there by XP.

Maybe mouse and keyboard are plugged into each others sockets?

The mouse driver may have become corrupt, in which case:-

Delete the mouse in Device Manager, re-boot and let Windows re-install the mouse driver.
