we have a sony laptop vgn fe21b with xp.

on two occasions recently on boot up the screen as stuck on the sony logo before windows loads.

a forced shutdown by holding the on button down cures it.

was wondering is this a sign of a future failure, everything else ok and fault only happened twice.

any views or advice please.

Have you tried a chkdsk. being xp the hard drive might be getting tired.

1) Click Start

2) Click My Computer

3) Right Click Drive (C:

4) Click Properties

5) Click Tools

6) Erro-Checking Click Check Now

6) Tick Both Boxes

7) Click Start

8) Reboot

Best of luck.

After the chkdsk, i would do an sfc /scannow. I have looked at the specks of ur lappy, it looks a nice machine, but then most Sony stuff does. i myself always get Sony lappys.

just ran chkdsk that was ok, booting ok at present.

keeping fingers crossed its not the hdd otherwise got to have buy xp as well a new hdd as the backup dvds you make only work with the original hdd.

even the psu could be pricey if i have to buy from sony, keeping fingers crossed it was just a bleep out of the blue.

thanks timbo for trying to help.

TATTOO PROCEDURE:

Create a Windows 98 Boot Diskette
Locate on Master CD's the folder 'DRIVERS'
From this folder copy to the boot diskette the following files:

Tattoo.exe
Shellhs.dll

Remove old HDD and install your new HDD

Power up the system and boot from the diskette into DOS and at the A> prompt
enter the following command:

Tattoo /createhsfromdmi

This will transfer a copy of the tattoo from the motherboard bios to the
hdd.

You should then be able to use the recovery DVDs

Or use something like Acronis to image the wole drive.

If you make a Image of your OLd Drive using Acronis True Image you can load this on to a new drive, Programs and operating System in one go. Take about 15 minutes to load it
