I just done the windowss back up and saved it to the d drive, will this be ok or should I burn to CD/DVD

for a "belt and braces" approach I would also put a copy of the backup onto CD!

For a real 'belt and braces' buy an outboard HD that you can plug into a USB socket and backup to that. Consider a second inboard drive and keep all data (word docs, pictures, etc) on that, then just backup the C drive with the OS, program files etc to the outboard HD. If you need to restore you get back to where you were without losing all your data. I use EA8 to backup all my current OE data and emails to the second HD and have a mirror backup of a clean XP install with a clean install of progs on the USB drive using Acronis (not free), takes 15 minutes to restore about 20GB to the C drive rather than hours to reinstall XP and progs
