Free Anti-virus and Anti-spyware downloads

  Katie's Bloke 17:13 13 Jun 2005

Hi, I'm after a free download of anti-virus and an anti spyware software. There seems to be a lot of programs that identify spyware and virus' but not many that remove them aswell (without having to pay for the full version). It's for a computer that I use very occassionally on dialup so I'm reluntant to pay out for these programmes if there are freeware versions avialable. Can you recommend anything?

I've just switched from AVG7 (excellent) to Avast's anti-virus utility (just as excellent) for no other reason than it updates (or checks automatically) when you go on line - I originally installed it for a computer newbie who couldn't/wouldn't fathom out AVG's simple updating sequence.

If you haven't already got a firewall then ZoneAlarm is free, easy to use and highly effective:

There is a new free anti-spyware programme called SpyPry click here

It's not on the "rogues list" and the site has a good "Malware Info" section. Includes a real time process monitoring programme giving you "allow" and "block" options which uses few resources. I've only been using it for a few days but it seems okay.

Thanks guys for all those - I'll have a go at downloading some of them later this week.

Are they all identify AND Remove versions as so many seem to scan, identify and then demand a fee to remove? Cheers
