Formatting in MS-Word

When I’m writing a letter or document in MS-Word 2002, where I might want to put a few dashes --- or === or ~~~~ after a phrase or paragraph it gets taken over by either a straight line or wavy \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ line right across the page.
I know this is some sort of page or line break (I think) but don’t know how to turn it off.
If I go to the drop-down format menu & click Normal, or Clear format, it clears all the formatting inc: colour, bold, justification etc etc which I have to re do.
Can I just put a stop to this ?

cheers

Answer

Insert Menu, click AutoText, AutoText then the AutoFormat As You Type tab.

Remove the tick from the box labelled Border Lines under Apply as you Type, click OK.
