I am trying to format the hard drive on my sons 5 year old toshiba laptop .

The following messages have appeared.

Checking existing disk format

Recording current bad clusters complete.

Verifying 5726.26m

Trying to recover allocation unit 936,097

The last number is slowly increasing it has by 3000 in 15 minutes.

What should I do and what does it mean?

It means the drive is faulty.

Try the manufacturers "zero-fill" program, and diagnostic programs - but I don't hold out much hope, in all honesty.

Just running Norton disk doctor, it has hit a bad patch at 63% and taken an hour to move to 64% after labeling about 10 bad clusters.
Is the rest of the disk likely to be this bad or could it just be the patch we are on now?

Its the sort of task to be performed overnite. If its as slow as your saying, its likely not worth trying to use it.
