Formatting hard drive

  quod12 15:39 29 Sep 2009

I have windows vista and have put in an extra 1.5 gb sata hard drive for backing up things. All looks ok until formatting the drive.

It goes to 73% then stops. My pc doesn't freeze.

Thing is that this is the second drive I've tried and both have stopped at 73%!

Any ideas -please help

First, 1.5Gb ?? Are you sure this is right?

Are you formatting it NTFS?

Click on the start button - right click on Computer. Click on manage>disk management. Right click on the new drive, click on Format.

yes, its a Seagate ST31500341AS 1.5TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache from ebuyer.

I'm formatting it NTFS

1.5Tb is a bit different than 1.5Gb :-)

Sorry - I mean Tb not Gb

I had a look on Google, plenty of people with the same problem, the nearest I can find to a result concerns updating NVidia drivers and possibly updating BIOS and Drives Firmware.

Probably not much help I'm afraid, but gives you somewhere to look.

Good luck.

I always use DBAN (Dariks Boot and Nuke) to format. You'll find all the instructions on the following link. Basically you will have to download the software then create a bootable ISO. It's easier than it sounds!
