Formatting external hard drive

Hi everyone. Just bought a Maxtor 500GB external hard drive and plugged it in. It showed up as having that amount of free space on My Computer/Hard Disk Drives. However when prompted to format it, My Computer now states it only has 43.5GB Total and Free Space! What on earth have I done?!

What does Disc management say ?

Start /right click My Computer / Manage / Storage / Disc Management /

You may have unallocated space...allocate this.

You may well be seeing just one partition.

What is the operating system ?

Ok here's what I did last night in sheer panic! I did System Restore and this morning the External HD is asking me to format. To format, it comes up with a box reading: "Capacity: 811GB - File System: NTFS - Allocation Unit Size: Default allocation size/512 bytes/1024 bytes/2048 bytes/4096 bytes". What do I do?

Shall I do this before what you've suggested? OS is Windows XP SP2. Cheers.
