formatting 2nd partion

I have installed winxp onto a new hard drive. When running the xp set up, I created 2 partions on the 1st hard drive. (I also have a phsyical 2nd hard drive).

Now in XP I have gone to disk management and formated the 2nd partion.

Disk management now shows:

C: Healthy (system) - 1st drive partion 1

D: Healthy (active) - nb this is the 2nd drive

S: Healthy - 1st drive partion 2

Is it correct that the second partion doesn't show as active. I have right clicked it, but there is no option to 'mark partion as active' as with the other partion and other drive.

It is also showing as a logical drive where as the 1st partion and other drive are showing as primary partion.
