Formating in fat32 on xp not ntfs

  Blue screen of death666 18:42 01 Oct 2004

I have a 30gig disk in my pc.I have now purchased a 160 gig..both maxtor to run as a slave. The problem is my original 30gig is in fat32 and so I want to format and use my new 160gig in fat32 to use as a slave.
However...when I click on the new disk in my computer and try to format it,it only gives me the option to format in ntfs (which I have done) and no sign of fat do I get the pc to let me format in fat32???

Many thanks for any help

boot into the windows CD and the options should be there... but if you go into Control Panel and select Administrative Tools, then Computer Management or something like that (its gone out of me head!!) then when the box opens select Disk Management and you should see both your Hard drives...there you can format your 160GB as FAT32...

You can not format a 160GB hard drive as FAT32 in XP, it has a limit of 32GB.

You will need something like Maxtors Maxblast 3 for DOS to acheive this.

XP will not format above 32G in FAT32

The Format of the drive does not affect the files just the way they are stored NTFS is a better way of orgnising the files on the disk (less wasteful of space + quiker access) only disadvantage is windows 98 cannot read NTFS disks.

Thanks for the reply..

The problem is that in disk managment....when I select format....only ntfs is fat32??

well you can always partition the drives...thats probably why your only getting NTFS...partition them to at least 30GB...then you should get an option for NTFS or FAT32...

Exactly for the reasons given

Now I see.....

Can I drag all or some of the files on the fat32 disk to the ntfs 160 safely???
If not all, which ones will I have to leave well alone
