without a CD. Can this be done from a Command prompt (assuming you can access Command prompt in 2000) by 'format c:', or 'format c:/fs:fat32' as I think it will presently be NTFS? The aim is to install Windows 98SE.

Have you tried running a Win 98 start disc and using the Fdisk before formatting C

No because its a windows command prompt and windows wil not let you format the windows drive.

A windows 98 boot disk may not see the HDD if it is NTFS.

DO you have an XP CD? boot from that and reformat in FAT32, then run from the Win98 CD to install windows 98.

A 98 boot disk was my first thought, but then, as Fruit Bat /\0/\ says, if it is NTFS, that may throw a spanner in the works. Would throwing a spanner help?

The computer is not with me, by the way.

If you go to the Maxtor website you can download the Hard drive installer this will format the drive, this won't work on some other makes of hard drives you would just have to see,you don't day what make your hard drive is,or go to your hard drive makers website.

Boot disc for 2000 click here You should be able to run it just as 98

Format C: with the boot disc looks like you need four discs

Thanks, just looking on there myself. Maybe I'll get lucky and it's FAT32.

A win 98 boot will see the hard drive it just wont see the NT file system. You can still run Fdisk and wipe it from there if you want. You will not be able to format the HD to NTFS only FAT or FAT32.

Thanks, fdisk or format? I shouldn't need to change the partitions, just remove 2000. Format to FAT32 would do me nicely.
