Hi I have had an old Compaq in bits for months.
For the first time I managed to load MS DOS 6.22 whilst I was loading 6.22 it recognized the previous version that was on the HD DOS 5.
I had no problem in loading 6.22 but on rebooting the PC posted twice and I was prompted to hit F1 to continue at that point it posts twice again and comes up with missing operating system?
The HD is only 540MB I will format it again in the morning any advice on the best way to format the drive would be appreciated for Dos and Win3.0 as this may be the problem.

What I'd do would be:

Boot with first DOS disk

Type:
Format c:

enter

That should do it if my memory serves correctly.

Hi ok the hard drive is formated Fat16 and was done with a Win98SE flopy.
I tried your sugestion but it said the format cant be undone as it differs from the Dos?
I ran format anyway so I will let you kno what happens.

Hi again after loading DOS it came back no OS yet it reconized that Dos was on the C drive when again I tried to loade it and advised to abort istalation.
I removed the HD and used KILLDISK on a different PC.
After replacing it back on the old compaq I fomated it agin with the Dos boot disk 1 as you sugested and reloaded it again and this time with sucsess.
Next is to put win 3.0 or 3.1. its to old for 3.11.
