With windows 2000, you can format the hard drive as you install the operating system.
So start the computer with the windows disk in the drive. If it does not start the installation sequence, the alter the cdrom to be the first boot device in the bios.
If you think you have a problem with the hard drive, then after you have to press F8 to accept the license terms you will be presented with a screen to delete the partition with a "D". delete the partition and on the next page, rebuild it.
You will be then asked to format the drive. Options should include
NTFS or Fat32
quick or normal format.
I would pick a normal NTFS format. This will check the hole hard drive for errors.
Then just continue the installation as normal.
