As I write a lot of german, is there a way to to add the 2 dots (") over o's u's and a's etc. I've tried changing the keyboard to german, but it won't do it. Any help appreciated please

In word just use Insert - symbols and scroll through to the German characters

Without being sure I would suggest (if you have Word) adding German language support.
You will need the appropriate Office CD

Hi, it is a bit fiddly IMO, but Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map might provide what you want. Though I expect VoG™ will have a better answer for you.

Cheers.

If it is in Word then as said you can use Insert > Symbol - plus in the Insert Symbol dialog you can assign a shortcut key such as ALT + U for ü.
