Floppy Drive Problem

Hi all
A mate of mine at work is having a problem saving files to his A drive,he's using win98se the drive lights up and makes a noise but won't save any files.
I told him to restart pc in dos insert a floppy and type format a: but gets the error invalid media,or track o bad.Can anyone shed any light as to whether the drive has had it or if it is a software problem.

1. Repeat with a known good disk.

2. Check the data cable is firmly connected at both the floppy drive and motherboard.

3. That the power cable is properly connected (unlikely in this case IMO).

4. Failing the above try an alternative data cable is available.

5. If all else fails replace the drive - they are very cheap £5 or so.

First he need's to try a new cable if that don't work a new floppy drive

The majority of FDD drive problems are caused by damaged, faulty or incorrect cables.

Iv'e told him to remove floppy from device manager and then restart the pc,however he says it's not listed in device manager.Any ideas how to get it back?
