Floppy Drive 'not ready'

  wednesday 13 15:16 19 Nov 2005

On my win 98 PC, I inserted a working floppy disk with plenty of free space into the drive and as I changed the folder from My Documents to 3 1/2 inch floppy drive, a message came up saying that the drive was not ready.

I checked the connection wires inside as I had recently put in a new cd drive but it was all secure, and I'm sure I had used it after the new drive was put in and it was fine then.

Could it be that i need a new drive or is it something else?

New PC running XP?

Win 98 does not like floppies that have been formatted on an XP machine.

Try a floppy that has been made on a win 98 machine and it will probably be ok.

should I buy new floppy disks or a new drive?

Try taking a floppy with nothing on you require and then format it on the 98 machine.

This will tell you if its a drive or floppy problem.

I tried formatting 3 different disks but it kept on stating that no disk was inserted.

Time to open the case and check that the data cable is fully inserted at the drive and at the motherboard end.

New cable approx £1 new drive approx £5

I have a large collection of XP formatted floppy's that for the last year have worked on XP, 2000, Me, 98SE, 98 and even 95.
