Floppy Disk Controller in Device Manager

  dms05 12:04 02 Nov 2007

Device Manager has started to report I have a (faulty) Floppy Disk Controller. As my laptop doesn't have a Floppy Disk and it presence has never been reported before why has it suddenly appeared?

Your motherboard almost certainly does have floppy support - or at least the BIOS does - even if nothing is actually connected.

As to why it's suddenly appeared, I have no idea - perhaps the BIOS has changed and enabled it - have a look at the BIOS options.

I'll check! Many thanks.

At a guess
the BIOS has reverted to default settings (maybe CMOS battery voltage dying)

The default setting for FDC will be Enable.
There is probably another setting Floppy seek Enabled

Not being able to find a floppy the BIOS is therefore reporting an error.
