Flooded backgrounds when printing some graphics

Can anyone PLEASE suggest a cure for this? Suddenly, when printing certain b&w graphics (line drawings of local church, PCX and TIF) in which I have changed the colour to print them in, say, brown my printer floods the uncoloured background with colour. If I use a shade of black, then I get flooding with black. I thought it was my Epson Stylus Color 760 so bought a Canon i320 only to find it does the exact same thing. Both printers print the graphics perfectly in their original b&w so it doesn't seem likely they are corrupted. I'm using Windows XP Home and Publisher 2000. My Epson has no XP driver but uses the Windows generic one: the Canon is totally XP friendly and USB.

But in a graphics program you would normally have an option for the canvas/paper colour. Do you think that perhaps this may be the root of your problem?

Alternatively, you could choose "transparent" for your background colour.

Perhaps using a dedicated "graphics/photographic" program would give you better results?
