First Time Ethernet Connection

I am hoping to connect a Win XP and Ubuntu to an Orange Livebox with ethernet connections. The XP is very close to the Livebox and therefore no problem, however the Ubuntu machine will need a 25m ethernet cable. Will a standard cable do, or will it have to be shielded cable ( not normally available in France at those lengths)? Wireless connection is not an option due to the very thick walls of old French houses and my very limited understanding of the subject! Thanks for any help.

why not try using your mains wiring click here i have no experience of this myself, but it would save you running a cable

Yes, a 25m normal Ethernet cable will do the job you require 608. Remember though you get what you pay for.

You should have no problem with a good cable. I have a 30M trailing BB Cable from my phone socket (Dual phone and filter) supplied by BT and it works well. So it should be the same with an ethernet cable. Offices use much longer cables than that!
