I dont play games and am probably unlikely to. I think the most labour intensive activities I would undertake would be music production (Reason / Cubase) and usually run severaI programmes/tasks at the same time; I hate slow running machines. I would also like to be able to run with 2 monitors.

I have built many and the most important thing is to make sure the motherboard and cpu are compatible. That the memory is correct for the motherboard and that the graphic card suits it as well. At present I stick to ASUS motherboards and intel core 2 duo or quad. Not the latest cutting edge but very suitable for your general usage. A further thought for you is to perhaps as a first build you use either a barebones or motherboard bundle from the likes of Novatech who put the parts together and test them. You then add things like the hard and optical drives.
