Firmware flashing

I have an external firewire dvd writer that I wanted to flash upgrade, unfortunately the fashing program only works over an IDE interface.Short of removing the drive from the case and connecting the drive to an IDE channel (which would invalidate the warantee)is there any way of flashing over a firewire connection?

Ask yourself three questions......a) will flashing the firmware make any noticeable difference, b) will it cure any problems that I am having, c) do I really need to and will it make my life better.

If you answer no to any one then forget it. If it will make a difference save the exe file to the ext HD and run the flash update, it will automatically find the writer as it should do if you run it from the HD. I would turn off your AV assuming that the file is from a reputable source.
