I'm taking Acronis backups to an external HDD. If I use a firewire to mini usb cable am I likely to get firewire speeds rather than USB 2 speeds?

Thanks Al

I think I'm right in saying that, in any connection of this type, you'll always experience the slowest speed of the technologies - e.g. if you use a USB 3.0 port to drive a USB 2.0 external disk, you'll only get USB 2.0 speed.

Hi Ian,

The port will be firewire with a mini usb connection on the other end. So I'm not really using a USB anything other than to connect to the HDD.

I suppose the only way to find out is to try it! The cables are quite cheap.

Unless anyone else has an answer..

Thanks Al

Ahh... Sorry Ian, I missed what you were saying. What you are saying is that as the HDD is USB2 then that's the fastest speed it will get.

So I need either a USB 3 or firewire HDD.

I think I get dumber with age.....

Al, Firewire and USB are very different technologies. Just because you can find a cable that fits at both ends doesn't mean it'll work ;)

If you've got a USB drive then it'll only work when it's connected to the USB port on your computer. Likewise for Firewire.
