Firewire lead six pin and four pin ????

My Mate has new camcorder which works great on USB2 and the relevant software but out of curiosity we wanted to try Firewire. His machine has four and six way socket for firewire so we bought a four to four lead and the result was nil.
We asked in shops and even a rep why the different leads etc with no knowledge gained. I noticed most Pc's with one port is always six pin so we bought a four to six and evrything is great.
Nothing too technical but can someone explain this six pin on the pc and then goes to a four pin on the camcorder
Thank you

Yes. The extra 2 pins from the computer ( 6 pin ) carry the current to drive the camcorder. So if the battery is flat or near flat, it will drive the device.

So the extra two pins are for power.;-)

many thank Dan11
That makes sense but I'm still puzzled how 4 to 4 can then become 6 going into 4.
never mind its now working ok and thanks again for your effort
