Firewire

How will I know if I have a firewire already on my pc?

Does the type of firewire affect a digital camcorder purchase?

Look in Device Manager for a 1394 connection - this is Firewire.

PS - normally there would be a Firewire connector on the back of the system also - though it might be possible to have an internal connection which needs a cable/plate to bring it to the outside, this would be unusual.

In the device manager it lists a 'OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Hiost Controller' .

Is that a firewire?

Yup

Cheers.

Another question - does the type of firewire have any impact on the capture performance?

On the link I gave above there is a fairly good explanation of Firewire - I'm not aware of any distinctions in types personally - are camcorders offered with different types?

Not sure. Feeling my way around the subject.

At the risk of asking an obvious question (never stopped me before) does the firewire act like a USB connection between the camcorder and the PC?

Ah - I see there is 1394b (800Mbps) now offered - unless your computer says otherwise it will be 1394 (400Mbps).

You can get plug-in cards with 1394b (Firewire 800) - I'm pretty certain a camera with FW800 could be used into a FW400 computer - but just at the lower speed.

Whether changing your PC to FW800 would offer any major benefit, I don't know - clearly transfers would be twice as fast - but in practice whether this would matter, I can't say. FW400 is pretty fast anyway.

"At the risk of asking an obvious question (never stopped me before) does the firewire act like a USB connection between the camcorder and the PC"

As far as I'm aware, it would be very similar - high speed USB is 480 Mbps - similar to FW400.

Cheers once again. You have been a big help
