Firewalls- do they make a difference

Hello
I have been using Zone Alarm for several years now but I am not a fan of the latest version. I have heard that Commodo was worth a try so I changed to it yesterday.
All I can say is that my peed test results (3 different) all indicate an increase from an average of about 4900 Kbps to 5900 Kbps. Tried again this morning in case it was an abberation but the readings are confirmed. This may of course not be the case universally but at the moment I am enjoying the moment so to speak.

Out of interest, I've just run some tests using the website:

h t t p ://speedtest.net

and Zone Alarm did seem to have an impact on download speeds with XP, but not Vista. I have a 4Mbps Cable connection. Upload speeds in brackets.

Vista + Zone Alarm 3963 kbps (364)
Vista - Zone Alarm 3938 kbps (366)

Apple Mac no firewall 3909 kbps (360)

XP + Zone Alarm 2976 (325)
XP + Zone Alarm 2638 (294)
XP - Zone Alarm 3954 (327)
XP - Zone Alarm 3907 (310)
