Firewall Router, or Firewall Router and Software

  It's Me 19:34 21 Jul 2004

I have a Firewall Router connecting me to a broadband line.
I have been told that since I have this piece of hardware that I need nothing else except, of course, antivirus software, and that a software firewall only causes problems. However, I have also read that even with the hardware the protection has holes that can only be covered by sortware such as Zonealarm. I am also told that Zonealarm is vastly superior to XPs' built-in firewall.
I am a confused now, although to be honest, not all that confused about a piece of Microsofts' software being inferior.
Any thoughts would be helpful.

I use firewall shows when programs are trying to connect to the internet...would also recommend products such as cwshredder, spybot, adaware, spyware blaster etc to plug the gaps.

Yes Microshaft firewall is pants (not sure if sp2 will make the difference)

If you are using a router, can we assume you have a small network ie more then one pc? If that is the case then you cannot use the freebee Zone Alarm, it is for stand alone pc's only. You would need to pay for Zone Alarm Pro.

Yes the XP f/wall is pants!

Thanks for that, both of you.
I'll try out Zone Alarm Pro and see what happens.

I have a small network (three computers at the moment) all connected to an ADSL router and use Zonealarm Free version on each computer without problems.

They can all connect to the internet, and can all share files with each other.

I know it has been resolved, but...

Look at click here, which provides downloads for Freesco, a free linux router. All you need is an old computer that you are not using, and some networking knowledge. You load freesco onto the box, configure, have two net. cards - one going to your router and one to your local network, and bob's ur uncle...

you have a hardware firewall - it can be tricky to use if your net cards aren't supported, but you can download and install drivers.

Have a look...
