Firewall to blame for system glitches?

Hi,some of my games and simulations have inexplicably started glitching and malfunctioning and sometimes crashing to desktop, I don't want to unfairly accuse McAfee firewall but the trouble seemed to begin when I installed it a couple of months ago.
Is it possible that whenever it blocks something,it makes the system hiccup in some way?
(I have to stay logged on during gameplay to be able to send and receive play-by-email files)
Shall I uninstall it and try another firewall?
Can anyone recommend a good free one?
PS I've run AVG and Adaware scans but they came up clean so I don't think a virus is causing the glitches..
I'm Win 98SE/ AOL9 and PC-illiterate
