are these ok left running when i play online games such as quake 3 arena?

if you try zonealarm you wont have any problems with online games.its the easiest to configure.

I second Zonealarm - free, easy to install and operate, and no problems. You need an Antivirus as well, of course (I am now a bit more diligent on this as after hearing of everyone else getting virus attacks, I suffered one last weekend purporting to be an email returned as undelivered - it wasn't, simply a vehicle for Bugbear to arrive on. Nasty - have I ever been glad that I had Norton AV running in the background which caught it!).

If you turn of alerts yes you can leave them running.

You can use the downloads button at the top of this page for AV and firewalls.

No problems. Just turn off alerts as you say - you can have a look at the log anytime (it'll scare you!).
