I have windows XP If I install firefox browser should I remove the IE8 browser from my PC? Also I run Microsoft essentials security, do I remove that program if I install Avast?

You cannot remove IE (although you might be able to revert from IE8 to an earlier IE). IE is used (at the very minimum) by Windows Update regardless of what default browser you have and so cannot be removed.

You have to remove MSE before installing Avast.

Leave IE8 as it is needed to connect to windows updates but set Firefox as Default Browser. Be careful when installing Avast - remove tick from box else you will end up with Chrome as your default browser.

I deleted IE8 on my laptop as it and decades of security fixes were taking up quite a lot of disk space. I then updated IE6 which was left and then used Add or Remove to disable access to it. I've also started using 360 Internet Security which allows me to run the browser sandboxed.
