File servers - where to start

  matthewowl 21:06 15 Apr 2008

I have a desktop pc and laptop and use them over a wireless network.
I was thinking some sort of file server might be useful so i can store files on it and then access them from both the dektop and laptop (i'm thinking music, photos, spreadsheets).

The problem is I haven't a clue about what to buy. I was looking at this (click here). Obviously i need to think about the storage capacity but what else do i need to consider?
Is speed an issue and how do you compare speeds of different products?
Would i need to buy additional software or hardware or is it all included?
It says that it connects via ethernet - is that to my wireless router or does it need connecting to a pc?
Sorry for my ignorance. If anyone can point me at a dummies guide to servers it would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks.

Thanks MCE2K5.
I'll steer clear of that then.

What did you replace it with?
