File Extension Identity...

Is it possible to determine which file extension is appropriate to file it serves.

For example, if I renamed a .png file, .gif, then although the file would remain a .png file, how could it's true identity be established??

By removing the option to hide extensions for known file types.

Found in folder options, view.

That's if I've understood your query correctly.

I've already got mine set to show.

The particular problem is a small file (80 x 80 pixels and at 14.1 kB) with a .gif extension, which won't load onto a forum as an avatar, when to all intents and purposes it ought to.

It occurred to me that the file may not be all that it appears to be!

is the .gif file like an anamation?

see if it will open in a different application!

It is an animation.

The problem is now solved but I don't know why yet!
