Were they created in an old version of word, or another word processing package? Could just be converting to the latest version.

no the document was produced using the same version

Were they produced on the same machine? Have they got any unusual fonts/clipart/graphics in them?

Do they eventually open ok, or does it hang?

they were produced on the same machine all the documents are pure word documents with the same font used. it is only one file on the disc that does not open..just get the file conversion box..and the document does not open.
