Faulty hard drive on HP laptop?

  harley1340 14:22 06 Oct 2008

I have a HP laptop that has suddenly thrown up the following problem. Windows XP starts up and my desktop is loaded OK, but, you can't access anything. You can't open folders or access start-programs etc. I have also noticed that thehard drive does not appear to run.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, John

You would not get to Windows if the Drive was faulty. Can you try double Click My Computer then Right Click on C:\ choose tools ans check disc, tick the box to do a full scan and fix of errors

PS are you Using a Mouse or Touchpad and or keyboard? As you may have faulty Hardware in that department

Many thanks for your suggestions. It appears that the hard drive has a faulty sector. I have been able to access the drive and backup information by removing the battery and just running from mains. It all seems to run OK but everytime I boot up I get a SMART warning saying imminent failure press F1 to continue. New hard drive on order. Thanks again.
