Fat 32 to NTFS

I'm having a bit of a problem converting a external Buffalo USB drive to the NTFS filing system. I use run and CONVERT F: /FS:NTFS as this is my 'f' drive. When the black box comes up and I type the volume in as asked 'BuffHD-HB'
nothing happens when the box closes down, not even after a restart. As I have done this with an internal IDE drive using the same method with no problem I was wondering where I was going wrong. Any help appreciated.
