failing system unit

my system unit shuts down unexpectedly.i have to press the power button again or hold it down before it comes on again which is very frustrating cus it at times happen in the middle of a busy.
pls what could be the fault?and how do i resolve it?

This could be almost anything but the favourites are either overheating or a faulty driver. Start by opening up the base unit and checking that all the fans are spinning and that all the vents are clear. If you have a can of compressed air give all the fans and vents a blast. Make sure all cables are out of the way of the air flow (especially those old ribbon cables).

Meanwhile, see if you can identify a particular action that causes the machine to power down.

I'm a bit puzzled about your use of the words 'or hold it down'. Please give more details of when just presing the power button does not work.
