extra memory not showing in hd properties

I have installed an extra 2Gb Crucial memory modules to increase to 4Gb on my Dell Dimension E520 with a view to upgrade to Windows 7. In the hd properties it shows 2.79 Gb of 3Gb. Can anyone tell me where the other Gb of memory is? According to the manual the E520 has a 4Gb maximum memory level.

You say that you are about to upgrade to Windows 7 so presumably you still have Windows XP. If my memory serves me correctly, Windows XP can only see 3.2 GB of RAM and some of this could well be used for Graphics resulting in your 2.79Gb. You will need to install Windows 7 and then see what happens.

Xania is quite correct. All 32 bit Windows can only work with a max of around 3.2GB of memory before running out of address spaces. (Nothing to do with hard disk by the way). If you want to use more then you must go to a 64 bit version of Windows.
