my PC runs on Win Me, I installed a USB2 PCI card some time ago but was never sure if it was working at full speed. Yesterday I have attached a USB2 external hard drive (20GB) and tested speed using Roadkil's speed test prog - drive reads at only 0.8MB/sec (my main drive checks 30MB/sec). In device manager I have a yellow exclamation mark against NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller, but removing, updating driver has no effect and yellow mark remains - any help appreciated.
It seems I think that there are essentially two types of USB,PCI card. The first is a 'complete' item with its own 'processor' The second is simply if you like a 'socket converter' The first draws power from the computer but 'does its own 'thing' The second not only draws power but also shares the main processor - therefor making the whole system run slower. That is what I have been led to believe.
