External USB Hub Problems

Having installed an external USB hub, I am now experiencing a variety of problems: printer and internet connections will not work through it. In fact, the only reliable piece of hardware that does work through it, is an external drive! Any suggestions?

Is this a powered or unpowered hub?

The hub is powered!

Although it seems against the spirit of USB - you may have to install the devices again into the port you want to use. I've met this with some printers.

Transpires that the external hub was not fast enough - we required hi-speed transfer rate!

I'm somewhat a novice.
I plug in my memory stick but get no on screen response.
Nothing comes up to say E:/ is live.
My external hard drive responds to say it's on on the screen.
