External USB Hard Drive letter re assigned

Can anyone provide me with assistance?
I have an external USB hard drive which was originally assigned a Drive Letter M. I use this drive to store Norton Ghost Backups / restore points. The drive letter never changed, always remaining as M, even when the drive was switched on after boot up. Since using a SanDisk USB stick drive, the assignment for my External Hard Drive has changed to F. This will not be recognised for backups by Norton Ghost. I can still see the contents of my external drive in Explorer but it is now under Drive F.
Is there any way I can re assign the correct letter to the External Hard Drive and also fix it so that it doesn't change in the future.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Many thanks.
Keith.

Many thanks for your assistance rawprawn. I had searched all over to find such a link without success. I will make a note of it for the future.
Thanks again.
