external or internal dvdrw

I was thinking of installing an external dvd writer, and i have been told i need to first install a PCI card to upgrade me to USB2,my question is, has an external any advantage over internal in terms of speed due to having the USB2 rather than IDE.Thanks in advance.

The thruput rate of USB 2 is 480Mbps and IDE is about one quarter of that but a DVD burner will be less than either so whether you go for an external or internal drive is really down to cost. If you go for an external drive and you have USB 1 you will need to install a USB 2 PCI card in a spare slot in your PC (assuming you have one)as USB 1 only has a thruput rate of 12 Mbps (too low). Belkin do one for around £25 try this.. click here

Hope this helps.
