External HDD probs

  Ray5776 21:52 23 Sep 2007

I am trying to use an external USB HDD enclosure as a back up medium. The drive shows in "My Computer" as
local drive E, it does not show in "Disk Management"
I have tried 2 different HDD`s and when I try to use Acronis True Image I get the error message "Failed to read from sector O of the hard disk 2"

Can anyone advise on this please.

Is this a mains powered caddy ? or usb powered ?

Reason i ask this, some usb caddies have only 2 usb plugs (red and black) and no mains.Plug both usb plugs into the pc.

If mains powered, the above does not matter.

In My computer, right click the drive/properties/tools and check the drive for bad sectors.

Do you have two internal drives fitted ?

Also check the bios to see if it is recognised.

Hi, skidzy
It is mains powered.
The machine seems to think it is a CD drive as it asks me to use Media Player.
Tried the drive check but got the error "Unable to complete the disk check"
I only have one internal drive.
The external drive does not show in bios but it does in my computer and I can access it and read files etc.
May not be relevant but the PC is new, Wednesday this week, running XP pro

Try reassigning a different drive letter (like Z) to the external drive.

Possibly the drive has damaged sectors and are unreadable...basically..do not rely on this as your backup.

Someone else may have other ideas.

I don`t really see how I can assign a new drive letter as the drive does not show up in disk management only in my computer.
As I have tried two different HDD`s with the same result, my own opinion is that the caddy may be faulty. I will get a new one, cheap enough and try that.
Thanks for your help, any other suggestions welcome.

How have you set the jumpers?
