External HDD partitioning

Hi, I need some help understanding Partition Magic system. Precisely I want to have three partitions on my ext 200GB HDD. One for a backup of my XP home the other two for data etc.
At the moment I have partitioned the drive and it shows an extended primary of the whole at 200Gb and within this have three equal Logical partitions. My question is do I copy XP into one of the logical or do I need to make one a primary to accept an OS.
Thanks for any info.

Your beswt option would be to use something like TrueImage to create an image of the booting partion on the external drive ie if you currently boot from drive C, create an image of drive C and copy this image onto the external drive.

Yes thats what I will do eventually but want to make sure the drive is set up correctly ie primary or logical.
